ST BRIAVELS PARISH BOUNDARY WALK

This walk follows the boundary of St Briavels parish as closely as possible on public rights of way.
The length of walk is approximately 15 miles when starting and finishing from the village of St Briavels.

9.00am.
From ST BRIAVELS crossroads turn towards the Bream road and turn 1st R into PARK LANE passing PARK FARM on the R.
At the very end of PARK LANE, at HIGHGROVE FARM, go through gate and follow footpath to R along hedgeline. Ignore and pass 1st stile on R, keep to the hedgline and at end of field TR and cross the double stile.
Follow to L of hedgeline directly in front of you and slightly uphill. At far end of field cross stile to R of a gate into a lane.
At end of lane TR through AYLESMORE COURT and follow to the main B4228 road.
9.30am
TR onto main road for 100 yards.
TL over stile on the R of GHYLL HOUSE FARM driveway. Follow L side of field to cross stile in far L corner of field.
TL and follow L hedge to TL at 1st gap in hedge.
Follow farm track on top R of field and through a gateway at the far side.
Go straight on to farm buildings ignoring stile on L.
TR between farm buildings, through the gate and into field, crossing it centraly to a stile on the opposite side.
TR into lane and follow to road, passing COMMON HOUSE on the R.
10.00am
TL onto road for 20 yards.
TR into lane.
Cross stile at end of lane and head for the bottom R of field to cross another stile. Cross this field to opposite side, over next stile and through next field to a stile on the R of a line of fir trees.
TL onto road and follow round a sharp L bend and downhill passing HOLLYSIDE on R.
At WOODSPRING TL into lane and follow for half a mile passing BELMONT on the L to join the corner of SANDY LANE.
10.30am
Passing BROOKLANDS on the R take footpath downhill to join road.
TR onto main road.
TR into MERRICKS LANE.
SO crossroads passing LAUREL COTTAGE and TRELAIRE on R.
At fork in road keep L.
Ignore footpaths on the L.
TR into lane before a house gate across lane.
Follow lane through to an old derelict cottage and into the field just beyond. TR to cross stone stile.
11.00am
Go to top R corner of field and TR through gateway then TL out onto lane.
TL along lane passing DOWNFIELD on R.
Pass SYLVAN HOUSE driveway by U.S. mailbox on L and after 10 yards take footpath on L diagonaly through field.
With SYLVAN HOUSE on the L, go through a kissing gate and downhill through woods to another kissing gate to a road.
TR then 1st L over 2 stiles into a wood.
TL at footpath junction then sharp R downhill over 2 more stiles to the River bank.
11.20am
TR and follow the river bank for approximately 2 miles to BIGSWEIR BRIDGE passing BIGSWEIR HOUSE on the R.
12.00pm
TR onto main road then R again uphill signposted Mork, St Briavels, Stowe and Coleford.
TL then immediately R through woods following the "OFFAS DYKE FOOTPATH" signs.
TR then L still following "OFFAS DYKE FOOTPATH" into a WOODLAND TRUST area.
Keep L at fork in path.
12.30pm
At end of woods cross stile into a field.
TR and follow R hedge uphill to top R of field.
Go through hedgeline into next field to top R corner and through gate.
TR onto lane and just after a cottage on the R TL to follow road.
TR at road junction by STOWE GREEN FARM.
TL onto main road at telephone box and L again into the TRAVELLERS REST (Sadly now CLOSED) pub for lunch.
1.10pm

2.05pm
TL onto road outside the pub to pass the CLEARWELL STOWE HILL QUARRY on the L.
TR down a farm track towards a barn.
TL through a gate and cross field to top R corner.
Cross over a gate and cross a small corner of a field to another gate.
Cross next field to opposite corner and through gateway.
Head for the L of the farm buildings and go through a gate and over a stile.
TR to pass between farmhouse and buildings through a gate and over a stile.
Cross field to far L corner.
Cross next field again to far L corner and cross a stile.
TL down the main road for 100 yards.
TR up to a stile.
Keep L diagonaly across field uphill to the top to cross a stile.
Follow R hedgeline for 3 fields over 3 stiles.
TL diagonaly across next 2 fields and 2 stiles.
3.10pm
TL and follow lane for 1 mile to BREAM.
TR onto minor road and follow uphill for half a mile.
3.35pm
TL signposted Aylburton and The Woolastons.
TR over stile and cross field diagonaly to top R corner.
Cross over stile into wood following the top R side of wood for about three quarters of a mile. The path is not very distinct in places.
TR to cross a stream and up a slight rise to join a wide track which is part of the GLOUCESTERSHIRE WAY.
4.00pm
TL and follow track for about 1 mile over a stile to the L of a gate and on to the end of a coniferous wood to meet a road.
TR onto road and uphill.
TL through a kissing gate signposted GLOUCESTERSHIRE WAY and keep to L of field over a stile in far L corner into a lane.
4.30pm.
At top of lane pass WOOD COTTAGE on the L and TL onto track through more woods.
Go SO forestry commission tracks to meet a road.
TR onto road at CLANNA WOODS sign.
After a quarter of a mile TL over a stile to the R of a gate onto a wide track into woods.
4.45pm
Just before the uphill track to the water pumping station keep R to follow the valley bottom. After 20 yards take a sharp R uphill.
When the path levels off TL along a faint path to a stile.
Cross stile and field to the opposite side.
5.00pm
Cross next stile and field again to the opposite side.
Go through gate and to stile in opposite fence.
Cross stile to another stile on opposite side of feild.
Cross stile and retrace this mornings route from St Briavels by following L hedgeline through to gate and into road.
5.17pm
Follow PARK LANE back into village of ST BRIAVELS.
