BROCKWEIR AND HEWELSFIELD PARISH BOUNDARY WALK

04/06/00

On Sunday 4th June 2000 at 9.00am nearly 50 people set off from the layby on the B4228 GR565008. This route had been devised by Ger Dunford to follow as closely as possible on public rights of way, the parish boundary of Brockweir and Hewelsfield. Excellent laminated maps had been produced by him and were on sale at £1 a copy.
The party split into two groups to accomodate the fast and slow walkers. A dog called Harley left his owners in the slow group and spent the day up front. The partys followed roughly the route past The Tumps, Woolaston Common, Barnage farm, Clanna Ponds, Rodmore Mill, Highgrove farm and Aylesmore court to Ghyll House farm where we were given a police escort as the speed of the traffic and no verge to walk is quite dangerous.
We then went on to Hart Hill, Sandy Lane, Hilgay road, Scots Lane, Merricks Lane, Downfield, Sylvan House to the river bank and to the Brockweir Inn where the first group arrived at approximately 1.00pm. The slower group following by 3/4 hr, everyone having completed 10 miles by then.
Lunch had been pre-ordered at the pub by Luke Wilson on his mobile phone whilst on route, and was well earned by all. The pub coped admirably with the influx of people.
A few people elected to finish the walk here but most carried on after and hours rest to finish the final 3 1/2 miles to the start. The route taken was first south, following the river to the sharp left turn into a climb through Caswell Wood to Madgett Hill. Then followed the line of the woods past Cows Hill and Woodlands farm to the layby, arriving at about 4.00pm.
